As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, it’s a time to honor the vibrant culture, history, and immense contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities across the country. But it’s also an important time to reflect on the unique health challenges many in these communities face.
Hispanic adults are known to have longer life expectancies compared to others, but they often experience higher rates of conditions like diabetes, liver disease, and certain cancers. In fact, Hispanic adults are 50% more likely to die from diabetes than their non-Hispanic white peers. These challenges aren’t just numbers—they impact the lives of families, friends, and loved ones every day.
One key to improving these health outcomes is culturally sensitive care. When healthcare providers understand and respect the cultural background and needs of Hispanic and Latino individuals, it leads to better health, trust, and overall well-being. But access to this type of care is still limited for many.
At the Precision Aging Network, we believe that health equity begins with understanding. This month, we honor the strength and resilience of the Hispanic community, and we’re dedicated to learning more about the unique health needs they face, especially in cognitive health and aging. Your participation in our research can help create a healthier, more inclusive future for everyone.
This Hispanic Heritage Month, let’s celebrate the beautiful traditions and vibrant cultures of the Hispanic and Latino communities, while working together to make sure every individual has access to the care they deserve.
